The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection 2011 Fashion Show
The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection 2011 Fashion Show kicked off Fashion Week at Lincoln Center in New York last evening. The celebrity-studded affair celebrated the national awareness campaign for women about heart disease. Celebrity models included Ann Curry, Audrina Patridge, Camila Alves, Denise Richards, Dita Von Teese, Eve, Gayle King, Giuliana Rancic, Julianne Hough, Laila Ali, Linda Gray, Natasha Bedingfield, Patti LaBelle (see photo above and video below), Suzanne Somers (see photo below) and several others (featured in slideshow below). Watch the full video of the show on MyDaily.
There were plenty of celebrities in the audience to watch the presentation, including actor Matthew McConaughey and Apprentice-winning Bill Rancic, who were both there to cheer on their significant others (Camila Alves and Giuliana Rancic, respectively).
Many of the participants have a personal connection to heart disease, which motivated them to become involved in the show. "It turned out to be a lot of fun---now that it is over," The Today Show's Ann Curry, who was stunning in Carmen Marc Valvo (see slideshow below), told Luxist. "It wasn't so much fun leading up to it because I was kind of nervous. I have never done anything like this before."
Vivienne Westwood Red Label Show and Collaboration with Chivas Regal Unveiled
Vivienne Westwood is a busy Dame. Dame Vivienne, that is. The iconic London-based fashion designer is one of the rare few who shows her collections in various cities, including Milan, London and Paris. When Luxist had the opportunity to experience her work up-close on Sunday evening when she unveiled her Red Label Fall/Winter 2011 collection, it was on the third day of London Fashion Week. Earlier that day, her Austrian-born husband, Andreas Kronthaler, Vivienne Westwood's Creative Director, noted, they did a fitting with Helena Bonham Carter for the Academy Awards. A busy day, indeed.
Vivienne West's show was larger than life (see video below). It was presented at the grand Royal Courts of Justice at London's Strand, a gothic cathedral-like setting that was befitting for a designer of Dame Vivienne's stature. The inspiration behind her "Red Label" collection show was Lewis Carroll's "Alice through the looking glass" which evoked a feeling of British society and change. Models wore tartan prints, dresses with mis-matched seams, fantastic oversized hats (designed by Prudence Millinery, some were crowns), over-the-top makeup (including gold-painted faces) and hair styles that seemed to defy gravity. A video of the entire show can be seen on Vivienne Westwood's website.
Bold face names at the show included Jo Wood (ex-wife of Rolling Stones Ronnie Wood), singer Paloma Faith, Boy George, former tenns pro Boris Becker, Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes, and contemporary artist Tracy Emin. All were wowed by the show which was as magnificient a production as the Red Label Collection itself. "I am a big fan of Vivienne's, so I enjoyed the show," Nick Rhodes told Luxist backstage after the show. "She always has a few surprises. She is remarkably good at cutting things. So it has always reminds me of the Japanese, but I think they took it from Vivienne. I thought some of things were really exquisitely beautiful. There was one skirt and blouse toward the end that was quite classical. It was a black skirt with a white blouse that I thought was just exquisite---beautiful."
Former pro tennis player Boris Becker was equally impressed with the collection. "I thought, as always, she was spectacular with the different designs and the makeup--one girl was golden," Becker told Luxist. "Her creativity never stops. The Royal Court of Justice is a unique location with a very long runway. The girls did have to walk a long time, but nobody faulted and everyone did a good job."
The Fashion Statement: Indonesian Designer Meets First Lady
This was a big week for Indonesian fashion designers. Not only did the President Obama make a stop in Jakarta, but he touched down right in the middle of Jakarta's fashion week. While the President was praising the ideals of democracy and development at the University of Indonesia, local designers were sending a parade of pieces down the runways hoping to establish Jakarta as a fashion hub in Asia. Backed by the Indonesian Fashion Designers Association, the goal is to catapult Indonesian designers to the international stage. So far they've mostly had success at home. Until now...
The Jakarta Globe reported this week that one designer hit the jackpot. Priyo Oktaviano snagged a chance to present the U.S. First Lady with one of his designs, a face-to-face meeting most stateside designers would KILL for! Oktaviano, who worked for Balenciaga early on in his career and is known for quirky and edgy designs, said he was contacted only six days prior to the meeting. He had one day to make a dress and a coat and he looked up Mrs. Obama's size on the Internet.
"I made her a purple sleeveless sack dress from Balinese songket," he told the Globe. A songket is Balinese woven cloth. "I think Michelle likes to show her toned arms. And I picked bright purple because I think it will look good on her," he said. "Michelle liked the songket." No word on whether Obama actually took the dress or has plans to wear it. No matter. Oktaviano attained publicity nirvana.
The theme of Jakarta fashion week was styling traditional wear with a modern touch. The week kicked off with a tribute to the kebaya (derived from Arabic word for clothing "abaya"), a traditional blouse and skirt combo that most Indonesian women wear. Designer Defrico Audy mixed a batik print with metallic silks and red velvets (pictured below).
Other designers stuck with modern designs. Sebastian Gunawan, another designer who got to meet Mrs. Obama, presented a 92-piece collection inspired by old icons (Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe) and new (Rihanna and Victoria Beckham). He showed gowns with high shoulders which he said look particularly good on petite women.
Modernity was not lost on other designers either. The rash of empire waist dresses paired with platform shoes were every bit worthy of catwalks in New York. And can't you almost see Beckham in the look by designer Ninik Darmawan (pictured above)?

AFWL 2012 DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: VADIRA 7
Vadira7 is an indigenous brand that focuses on bridging the gap between functionality, creativity and the very essence of Africa. At Vadira 7 we believe that a woman is a work of art specially created by God and in turn every item of clothing is geared towards celebrating the glory of womanhood. The Vadira 7 woman is confident, sensual and fun, a woman who knows what she wants out of life and gets it.
Vadira 7 latest Collection is called flourish. It was inspired during a road trip through the amazons in the Nigerian Niger Delta. The regal, sensual, fluid nature of the palm trees, inspired the ribbed nature of the Vadira Flourish Collection jersey dresses. The silhouettes were rooted in the conventional, accentuating the hourglass curves of a woman that leaves a lasting suggestion towards the seductive.
The Ankara influence was loaded with leaves that are reminiscent of the branches of the palms but its bold colors speak of the strength of a woman contrasting with the lace infusion that connotes the delicacy of femininity. The quirky nature of the jackets expounds the unpredictability and fun nature of a woman.
The palm tree inspired the Vadira-7 Collection because its resilience and ability to weather the storm or the harsh weather speaks the consistency of inner strength and tenacity. Its ability to always flourish, always graceful, always beautiful and always standing strong despite the odds life throws at it is reminiscent of the way a woman should be
